The Veterinary Surgeons (Exemptions) Order of 2015 requires veterinary consent for an animal to receive veterinary physiotherapy treatment. A veterinary referral form must be completed and signed by a veterinary surgeon for all animals with a diagnosed condition, pre-existing injury or recovering post-surgery, prior to the initial appointment, to ensure suitability for treatment and to identify any contraindications.
Recent amendments to the legislation allows healthy animals to receive physiotherapy treatment without veterinary treatment, for the purpose of musculoskeletal maintenance. However, the animal must still be registered with a veterinary surgeon and the owner terms and conditions form must be signed. If the animal presents with any signs of underlying injury, disease, pathology or lameness during a session, treatment will not be performed and the animal referred to a veterinary surgeon for a clinical examination.
